SLEEPING

SLEEP IS IMPORTANT

Proper sleep allows the body to re-energize! It's the only time during the day when your system has a significant release of growth hormone which boosts the immune system and aids in the growth and repair of the body. Proper sleep also allows the mind to rejuvenate! Missing one night of sleep leads to a decrease in problem solving, learning ability, memory and concentration.

By making simple changes in your sleeping position, you may be able to improve your sleeping experience while taking the strain off your neck and back and avoid serious future problems.

YOUR BED

Do not confuse firmness with support. A bed that is too firm could actually prohibit good
sleeping posture and cause aches and pains. The ideal bed supports your body in proper sleeping posture without exerting too much pressure. Further, proper support will keep your spinal column in a straight line, in turn giving you a good nights sleep and physical well being.

Talk to us first if you are considering purchasing a new bed. You would be surprised how many people worsen their condition with the wrong new bed.

If you’re not ready to buy a new bed but you think your bed is too soft, try placing a sheet of plywood underneath the mattress. If your bed is too hard, use a two inch foam mattress topper.

YOUR PILLOW

Although there is no one single pillow that will satisfy every patient's neck, we suggest that you start with a quality Memory Foam Contoured Cervical Pillow. It is made to ergonomically support the natural alignment of your neck for outstanding comfort while you sleep. This type of pillow helps you maintain proper cervical alignment by gently cradling both the head and neck at the same time. It also changes shape as you move to provide responsive support all night long.

YOUR POSTURE

Do not sleep on your stomach... it produces significant strain on the lower back.

Sleep instead in the fetal position on your side. Put a pillow between your knees to take the pressure off your lower back. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow underneath your knees.

GETTING OUT OF BED

The best way to rise from bed is to turn on your side and then sit up sideways, using your arms
to help you.
